Inspirers: Stephen The Layman

saint_stephenDied: Between AD 34-35

His Role: Administer to the needs of the Hellenistic widows

Inspiration: A man who stayed faithful to his cause even to the point of death

Throughout the Inspirers series I have yet to take a look at a Biblical character. The reason for this is because it is very hard for us to relate to most biblical characters in a culture sense. Imagine trying to relate your life to say King David! We may associate ourselves with some of his struggles, but as a person, only a King could really relate. We aren’t nomads or living in tents. We relate to the principles of their life but not their actual lifestyles. However, there are some people in the bible who were just like us and their stories are an inspiration.

Stephen was a normal man with a normal job. His role was to help the widows of the first church. Many had been neglected and forgotten about. So Stephen along with six others were appointed to make sure they did not go without. However, knowing the history of the first church, this probably was not Stephen’s job! He volunteered in his role as widow helper.

Most of us can relate to this! We have our life, our family, our home, our job and our friends. Then some of us like Stephen help on a volunteer basis in a local church or local charity. However, if Stephens story stopped there is would be pretty boring. Stephen will be remembered for far more than his volunteer work, yet it is because of his volunteer work that he inspires me.

You see the bible says that Stephen was a man full of God’s Spirit. In fact this man was a man of prayer and power. When he prayed for the sick they got healed. When he prayed for the blind they could see, when he prayed for the lame they started to walk. If Stephen was alive today he could have his own TV show. He could wear a nice white suit and publish a few books. People would be lining up to be prayed for by Stephen.

The great thing about Stephen was that he knew exactly what he was created to do, and that was to look after widows. He did not get caught up in a hype. He saw himself as an average man who loved God and knew the power of God. So much so that when he was arrested and later stoned to death for his faith he did not waiver from what he believed. Stephen was a man who knew that the God he served was greater than anything he could do himself. He knew that the widows needed him more than he needed a big TV ministry!

Stephen was an inspirer and he inspires me to do the small things with as much faithfulness as I want to do the big things!

Inspirers – Rees Howells

Rees_HowellsLived – 1879-1950

Founder – The Bible College of Wales

Inspiration - To pray until there is a break through

I remember the Summer of 2000. This was a summer that was pivotal in my life and my calling. During this summer I read several books which included two biographies of two men whose life stories have been a constant inspiration to me. One of these biographies was of a man named Rees Howells.

Rees Howells grew up in the valleys of Wales, his job was a coal miner. During the beginning of the 20th century coal mining was the only way to really make a living in the valleys of Wales. It was one day in the mine that God spoke to Rees Howells and told him that he would be his provision, not the mining company. Howells, quit his job and declared that God would provide. To his family, friends and neighbors it seemed as if this man had lost his mind. In fact he was just being obedient for God.

This man spent several months in his bedroom just praying for sixteen hours a day. He would only eat bread and drink water and didn’t even make a trip to church on Sunday’s. However, it was through this extreme time of prayer that Rees Howells started to get a burden for the sick people of his town and the townships in the region.

Howells began to travel from town to town praying for the sick and preaching the news of Jesus being the savior of the world. Many people were supernaturally healed as Howells prayed. Many people who were alcoholics were set free. People through the ministry of Howell found new life. It was during this time that what we know as the “Welsh Revival” took place, when God moved in a supernatural way across Wales and thousands decided to become Christ followers.

It was in Howells later years that he founded the ‘Bible College of Wales’ which is located in Swansea. In fact my Auntie & Uncle live less than a mile from the campus. Each time I drive past the Bible College I am amazed that this all started because one man decided to listen to God and pray. He didn’t pray for one day, nor one week; this man prayed until God told him to stop. He sacrificed his own needs for the sake of others who were hurting and in need. Instead of just complaining about a situation, this man would get on his knees and wouldn’t get up until God and dealt with the situation.

I am inspired my this man. You can read his biography by Norman Grubb to get a better understanding of this mans life. This man inspires me to never give up in prayer. This man inspires me to go to the extreme for God and also inspires me to know when God tells you to do something, do it, don’t look back and trust that God is in control.

Inspirers – Elsie Penduck

Name: Elsie Penduck

Relation - Beloved Grandmother

Inspiration: Believe always in the provision of God

In 1955 Elsie Penduck became a widow after her husband died from a heart problem. Her husband a preacher, beloved father and sole provider had suddenly died to leave Elsie a grieving young mother with two young children aged 10 and 7 as the sole provider and influence on her children’s lives.

Elsie did what she had to do and went to work. Sometimes working ten to twelve hour days all so she could provide for her two young children. Many would have said her children would go off the rails. No father figure in their lives, a mother who was hardly home and two children who spent many days on their own in their government subsidized home in Newport, South Wales.

However, these kids did not go off the rails; yes, maybe they were a little mischievous and got into a little trouble from time to time, but all in all they were good kids. They grew up to love God and devote their lives to his service. These two kids didn’t go the direction of so many would have in their position all because Elsie did one thing, that was to leave their lives in the palm of God’s hands.

My father would tell me stories of waking up in the middle of the night to go downstairs into the kitchen for a glass of water and find his mother, Elsie knelt on the cold kitchen floor sobbing her heart out before God in prayer. He said even though she worked crazy hours and had two kids to care for that she never missed a weekly prayer meeting. He told me that money was tight, but through Elsie’s pure faith God always provided.

One story I heard from my father shows Elsie’s faith in a nutshell:

One night while at the church mid-week bible study they had a visit from a missionary. As the missionary talked about their work and needs Elsie felt moved in her spirit to give to this missionary. After the missionary had preached it was time for the offering plate to come around. As it did, Elsie felt God say to give one pound. The problem? This was all she had in her purse and that pound was to pay the gas bill the next day. Elsie didn’t have anymore money and if she gave that pound, the gas would have been cut off. Well Elsie did what she felt God say, she gave the pound. As she walked home she just believed that God would supernaturally provide. When she arrived home, my father came to her with a wrinkled up five pound note (think your electric bill multiplied by five!). My father told her he had been on his way home from school when he saw something stuck in a fence, it was the five pound note. That day God provided. Everyday God provided!

My Grandmother Elsie died when I was four years old, but she was a woman who has inspired my life. Her desire for God was so pure and authentic. Her belief in God and his provision was off the charts. Elsie Penduck inspires me to believe that nothing is too difficult for God. I pray that the legacy of prayer and faith that Elsie started can and will continue through my life.
