Moldy Sandwiches

During lunch yesterday I had one of those teachable moments. I was in a hurry and had five minutes spare to eat before an appointment would arrive at my home.

I quickly went into the fridge, got the last bit of lunch meat that we had left, then went to one of the cabinets and found the only bit of bread we had, which were two little pita breads. I opened one of the pitas and put the lunch meat inside and proceeded to eat my quickly made sandwich.

The taste didn’t seem as fresh as I had hoped but thought it was just the lunch meat on its last legs. As I stuffed the pita into my mouth so I could finish quickly I looked down and noticed the last bite left on the plate. To my shock at the bottom of the pita was a large furry section of white and green mold!

Yep you guessed it; I had just eaten a molded sandwich! As sick as you feel just thinking about it, I felt about ten times worse eating it! Anyway, I haven’t been sick yet, which is good, but I did learn a great lesson.

I realized that sometimes we let our lives to move at such a quick place we sometimes do not realize some of the junk we allow in your lives. Some of the things we see, hear, feel and taste are moldy and are not good for our lives, yet because we have so much going on we do not even realize we are allowing such junk to filter in.

When junk enters our lives, it creates a system that becomes unhealthy. Eventually, the unhealthy junk takes over and pulls us down. 1 Corinthians 6:9 tells us that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. This means we must keep it pure and feed our bodies and souls with healthy foods. When we don’t it causes pollution into our souls. When there is pollution there is usually death!

So today, take a moment to evaluate what have you allowed in your life this week? Have you allowed health or rotten moldy things to enter your life? Slow down a little this weekend and maybe you might need a spiritual de-tox to force the moldy sandwich out of your life!

Clarity after the Fog

Near my family home there is a road that takes you down into a small valley before you climb back to the top of the hill. This road takes you through an area called Penn Common.

I use to take this road a lot. In fact every Sunday I’d drive through it on my way to church. It took you into a little bit of the countryside and through a golf course. The scenery was a little nicer than driving through the city.

At the bottom of this hill is a section where most mornings there gathers a little bit of fog. If you know anything of England, you know there is a whole lot of fog. Some mornings would be worse than others. This area always had the thickest fog.

Going through this section of road always reminded me of the journey of faith. One moment you have clear sight, the next you can’t see ahead of you and you just trust in knowing that the road leads to where you are going. Then all of a sudden you break through the fog and can see clearly again.

I feel I’ve just broken through the fog in my life. For a moment things got a little unclear and misty for me. Through this process I just had to hold on and trust that God had taken me down the right path. Then one day a few weeks ago I felt like I broke through the fog. The feeling is amazing. Once again you can see clearly of what is ahead; you can look out as far as the horizon will allow you and you once again have confidence that you are on the right path.

I really don’t know why God takes us through those foggy times, but I do know that they do not last and when the fog lifts life becomes all the more amazing.

Maybe you are going through a foggy patch in your life. Hold on, trust God and know that the path your on is the right one. Soon the fog will lift, so be patient.

Tough Spiritual Disciplines

One of the most difficult disciplines I have always found as a Christian is a steady bible reading plan.

Since I was young I was always told that you must read the bible everyday to be a ‘good’ Christian. I even think there are some old Sunday School songs about that. However, for me I just found it tough.

I tried every reading plan there was, but none seemed to work. And if I’m being totally honest here, even as an adult and as a Pastor I found reading my bible difficult. I love the word of God, I love to teach the word of God and I love to study the word of God, but I struggled to keep it as a discipline.

Then one day it all changed. I’m not sure when it happened. I think it was in one of those low moments in my life. My bible reading became one of the most enjoyable parts of my faith journey.

This is what happened. I found out that the bible is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). When you read the bible it transforms your life. It speaks into your life and it is like food for your soul. I already knew this, but suddenly I found out how to open the packaging and get into that food. I discovered the more you eat of this food, the more you want.

There was a change in my mentality towards the bible. One day it was a spiritual disciple, the next it became a necessity. One day my thinking was one of duty the next it was one of excitement as to how the words I would read that day would transform me.

You see the bible will rarely change lives if people read it out of duty and like a task they must check off their list. However, it will blow your mind and change your whole being if you open the pages and open yourself to the words God is speaking to you.

So today, open your bible and ask God to speak through His word.  Ask Him how you should open the packaging so you can eat of that soul food and watch your lives change before your very eyes!
