Clearing my Office

So I am working through my last week at Grace. I have mixed emotions as I am sad to leave a place I love so much but incredibly excited about the new adventure that is ahead.

During this week I have been clearing out my office. Trying to make sure there is a smooth transition and that there are manuals, how to do lists and documents available for the right people who will be taking on my work load.

I am not much of a hoarder. I normally like to keep things clean and do not have a problem in throwing things out. Well that is what I thought until I started organizing my files and getting ready to vacate my office.

It amazed me to find that I have kept so much stuff in the last two years that was just junk! From brochures, to old manuals, to duplicate spreadsheets, to folders with excess copies of handouts I did 18 months ago. I could not believe that I had hoarded so much stuff. So instead of it taking a couple of days to clear out my office, it is taking me all week!

This reminds me of how we hoard things in our own lives. We hoard the memories of a bad relationship or a time someone deeply hurt us. We hoard failures of our past or the temptations that once haunted our lives. We hoard the little voices over the years that have told us we are not good enough or we don’t have what it takes. We hoard the clutter of a failed marriage or business and can’t ever seem to make a clean break. We hoard things deep down in the very closets and filing draws of our lives just in case we may need them again in the future.

The problem with hoarding things in our lives is that it leaves us with a constant reminder. Hoarding takes up space that leaves new opportunities with nowhere to go and hoarding eventually becomes messy and overwhelming so that you never clean up your mess!

So are you hoarding anything in your life that is never going to help you in the future? If so, it’s time for a clear out!

So my office is starting to look more organized and it’s amazing how many trips I’ve made to the dumpster already! Still two days to go!
