Don’t Just Cover The leak, Fix it!

It’s not often I get on my soap box, but today is one of those days! I try to be as positive as possible on this blog, but there are just some things and some people who get me a little irritated! So before you read any further, if this offends you, it’s not meant to, but please see my heart in this!

Have you ever had a leak that you just can’t fix? I remember a few years back we had a gas leak in our little ‘ghetto car’. I could see how the gas was leaking out of the tank onto the road. So I got some special ‘gas leak tape’ and tried to stop the leak with the tape. The only problem was that the leak would stop for about 10 minutes then appear somewhere else. After several hours of taping the bottom of the car I realized it was time to invest in a new gas tank. Whatever way I tried to stop the leak it would just resurface somewhere else. This was because I failed to get to the source of the leak.

I feel Christians can be like this at times. One thing I have seen over the last couple of years is the rise of a problem with pornography amongst Christians. I’m not sure if I believe all the statistics, but if they are true then the average Christian man in America has some serious problems!

T0 combat the growing problem of TV and Internet porn many organizations and companies are coming out with TV and Web filters. These filters are installed on your computer and when you visit a questionable site up to five people who you have designated, get an email to say you visited that site. Seems like a good idea? Well I thought so as well until I remembered my gas leak story. We are urging our men (and women) to filter everything, from our Computer, to our TV to our phones but we are substituting dealing with the source for these ‘tape’ filters.

I’m not against web filters, in fact I think they are a good idea. They created accountability and make someone think twice about going to a certain site. However, I’ve come to the conclusion, if you need a filter on your computer then you have a problem that a filter can’t solve! Just like the leak, eventually your problem will find another way to leak out!

I think the same with marriages. Many marriages have lost the passion and intimacy that made it special. So what is the answer? Date night! If you’ve lost your passion in your marriage, a date night is just a band-aid and won’t solve the problem.

I think we like to find quick fixes to our problems. If you have a problem with pornography put a filter on your computer. If you have a problem with your marriage, schedule a date night! Short term fixes don’t solves long-term problems.

If you are struggling with pornography, you need to seek help, help that will enable you to find the source of the problem. If you are struggling with your marriage, you need to seek help, help that will enable you to find the source of the problem.

So I got a new gas tank and never had the problem again. I found out the leak was in an area I would have never been able to fix on my own. I had to seek professional help!
