Hillsong’s Success

I listen to Pandora Radio a lot. The great thing about Pandora if your not familiar with it is that you can custom make your own radio station with music you like.

What I find amazing is that on almost all the custom radio stations I have made on Pandora, in nearly all the cases I have heard a song either performed or written by someone from Hillsong.

hillsong-faith-hope-loveI remember the very first night I heard this new song called, “Shout To The Lord”. I had been at a youth rally and went home all excited telling my parents I had heard the best song ever written! Well I’m not sure if it was the best song ever written, but I know from that song the music that is sung and played in our churches have forever been changed.

Hillsong have had incredible success over the past 15 years. It seems that almost every worship set sung and played on Sunday’s in churches across the nation have at least one song that originated from Hillsong.

I think it is very obvious why they have been able to shape the worship culture of the church today. It is not because of a great marketing campaig (even though they have those); it is not because they play 21st century relevant music (even though they do, and do it very well); it is not because they are one step ahead of everyone else concerning music genre’s (even though they are certainly leading the way), but I believe it is because they have found what they were designed for by God. They have then pursued the roadway God has paved for them and they are doing this all within the gifts, talents and creativity within their own church.

God has designed everyone of us for something great! We can either accept what God made us for or choose to go our own way! Real success will come when you choose God’s way. Then you must be willing to go down the path God created. Not the path everyone else is going down. Not the path that seems easist or even the path they may seem the most logical, but the path God paved for you. Then finally you must start to create just as God planned you to create. You may not be the most creative person in the world, but you have been made in the image of God and he is the great creator, that means you can create! Too many people think they don’t have to redesign the wheel, but it is people like Hillsong who are always looking two steps ahead of everyone else and know that the wheel of today will not work tomorrow who will be the ones who go down in history as people who fulfilled what God designed them to do.

Next time you are in a worship service and hear a song written by Hillsong remember they are doing what they were created to do. My challenge to you is this, what are you doing to fulfill what you were created to do?

Unseen Opportunities

This past week I think God has opened my eyes to the opportunities that are all around me everyday.

On Sunday night I was at a restaurant and got talking to the waiter. He heard my “Arkansas’ accent and soon came to the conclusion that because I was British I must like punk rock! Every time he came to the table he would mention about different British bands he liked. Being the punk rock expert I am I wasn’t very surprised that I hadn’t heard of the bands. Before we left he gave me a note with a list of British bands that are coming to the Baltimore area soon.

On Tuesday afternoon a deaf homeless man walked into our offices looking for some financial assistance. He was living in his car and was struggling to find work. We have a benevolence process at the church that takes about a week. I went through my usual talk of filling out the application form. However, I looked at that guy and thought he is in need right now and doesn’t need another process to go through! So I got in his car, drove with him to the gas station, filled his car and bought him lunch.

Last night, my wife and I went to some timeshare/vacation package presentation (the promise of two round trip airline tickets was enough to get us there). As with all these presentations they tried to put the hard sell on us, giving us a ‘great deal’ only for us to say a polite no. It seemed like everyone who worked for this company tried to sell us the package. They even brought the Regional Manager in to give us the hard sell. Normally I would have got angry, but not last night. We wanted to talk to these guys, not about vacations but just about life, and we did. It turned out that two of these guys lived interesting lives that were full of material things, but I just got the feeling they were searching for much more.

Your probably thinking why are you telling me about this and where were the opportunities? The reason I wanted to blog about it is because in each of these situations I felt God say, reach out to them right where they are at. The waiter was into punk rock, reach out to him through punk rock. The homeless man was broke and hungry, reach out to him through feeding him. The hard core sales men were all about business and the good things in life so reach out to them through the good experiences I have been through in my life.

After these three encounters I heard something in my very soul whisper, ‘how many other opportunities have you passed by without reaching out‘. How many waiters have I got annoyed at for talking too much? How many homeless people have I walked over? How many sales men have I tried to run away from as fast as possible? The answers to these questions is, too many!

We get opportunities everyday to reach out to people in need. To meet people right where they are at and just maybe have the opportunity to show them the very light of Christ that lives within you!

What opportunities are you willing to take today?

Inspirers – Dr Mark Buntain

MarkBuntainDied – June 1989

What did he do for a living: Missionary to Calcutta, India

Inspiration: To reach out to people who are not the same as you

On a Wednesday evening in May 1989 I sat in my parents living room listening intently as a man named Mark Buntain conversed with my father about his life and ministry. Dr Buntain had just come from speaking at the church my father Pastored. He had spoken about his work and calling to the children of Calcutta, India. I saw pictures of this man reaching out to the poorest of the poor in a culture that was very different from the one he had lived most of his life in. As he spoke with my father something inside of me wanted to yell out, ‘why would you want to live in a poor country? Isn’t it frightening to be away from your family in a strange place? I hope God never calls me to India!’. As a nine year old boy I couldn’t get my head around the thought of someone being willing to give up a good, safe life to reach out to people who were very different from them! This mans story stayed with me. The pictures of the poor children stayed with me and the thought of someone going to the other side of the world all to give a cup of water in Jesus’ name stayed with me.

Shortly after Dr Buntians visit to our home and his trip to England news came about his death. In June 1989 Dr Mark Buntian died of a cerebral brain hemorrhage. His life had been turned upside down in 1953 when he felt God call him to India. A year later in 1954 he received an invitation to go to India on a one year assignment of evangelistic crusades. His physical stay ended in 1989. However, today the work and life of Mark Buntain is not a distant memory but an inspiration. The ministry he founded, Calcutta Mercy Ministries is stronger than ever. Now there is a hospital, schools, homeless shelters, a large church, a huge feeding program, clinics, orphanages and many more programs and ministries that will blow your mind away.

In December 2005, my wife Raquel & I had the opportunity to visit and minister at the Mark Buntain Memorial Church in Calcutta. My wife had been invited as the guest soloist at their community wide Christmas Production. On the Sunday morning I had one of the most humbling experiences of my life. I stood in the same pulpit where Dr Buntain had preached the gospel many times and shared the word of God to the church.

This man was and still is an inspiration. We has inspired me to never stay in my comfort zone but to reach out to people who are not like me. Reach out to people who aren’t as fortunate as me and to reach out to those who need a cup of water in Jesus’ name!
