Who is Suresh Kumar – President of Harvest India, Tenali, Andrah Pradesh, India
What is Harvest India – A humanitarian organization that operates as a non-governmental organization in India
Inspiration - To change the world one life at a time
The first time I met Suresh Kumar was on my first trip to the Nation of India. Suresh was (and still is) the President of Harvest India. I had gone with my father who was invited to be the key note speaker for a conference of Pastors in Southeast India. In addition we were going to be part of a series of services that would result in the opening of a new church in a remote village in the state of Andrah Pradesh. The moment I meet Suresh and his team I was inspired to know that I also can help to change the world.
The story of Harvest India is incredible. Over 40 years ago Suresh’s mother Lalitha, a widow with two young sons felt God call her to reach out to the rural villages of southeastern India. Each week she would walk hundreds of miles carrying her two sons and their supplies going from village to village telling the message that Jesus is the hope of the world and he loves you. Lalitha saw some response but the early years of her ministry were difficult and tiring. However, Lalitha carried on what she knew God had called her for. As the boys grew older they went from being a burden to carry to being partners with their mother in ministry. As the years went on the “seeds” of the early years began to grow until they started to see what Lalitha had been called to plant. A harvest of souls for the Kingdom of God. Today Lalitha has passed on and it is Suresh who leads this incredible ministry.
When I met Suresh in 2000, Harvest India had planted over 300 churches in the states of Andrah Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, had one bible college, one orphanage, one widows home, one medical center and had helped build a few dozen water wells. Not bad considering this was started by just one women hearing God’s call. However today, only nine years later Harvest India has planted over 1500 churches, has 10 orphanages, six bible colleges, five elderly homes, built hundreds of water wells, has a home for women who were once in prostitution, has taken their medical center to the road that travels from village to village and cares each week for over 120 AID/HIV victims. All I can say is WOW!
These guys are doing it! Doing it well and doing it all to be the hands and feet of Christ extended. Not only are they seeing an incredible harvest but they are doing it in a country and region that is hostile to Christianity. The cast system and Hinduism rule in India and Harvest India are breaking these rules. They are doing this each week swimming against the stream of their culture, but they are doing it! Suresh and his family are inspirers. If they can change the world they are in then I know with God’s help and calling I can help change the world I live in!
