Do you read warning signs?

I’m either getting old or I have special powers! Why? Because I can tell when it is going to rain. Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day, but I knew it was going to rain. Not because they announced it in the weather forecast, but because my body felt it.

Whenever it is going to rain I start with a  headache then my knees and ankles start to ache. After damaging my knees and breaking my ankle playing soccer a few years back my joints now ache whenever it is going to rain. I can tell the signs so I get ready!

cows

Living in the UK proved to me you always have to be ready for rain! It would be a nice sunny day, yet if you drove through the countryside and saw the cows were lying down, be sure to get the umbrella out.  I’m no scientist, but it happened every time!

When I started to drive in the US I had a hard time, not just because they drive on the wrong side of the road, but because the road signs are so unbelievably small. In the UK it is impossible to miss a road sign. They are in your face! On American roads I would come to a screeching halt at a stop sign because I had missed the warning 100 yards back. I have now learned to be more diligent in looking for warning signs when I drive.

There are warning signs all around us. Signs that warn us about our bodies, our emotions, our spiritual life and our relational life. We need to learn to read the warning signs, because if we don’t we’re going to go straight through the stop sign without looking and get ourselves into a terrible accident.

I am learning to read my body when I need rest. I am also learning to read my reactions and attitudes. When they are off, or I am acting out of character I am learning to recognize them as warning signs. When this happens, I am learning to realize that something either spiritually or relationally is off. Usually it’s both, and it’s my relationship with God that is off.  The problem with my warning signs are that most of the time they are small, and unless I am looking for them, or at least trying to pay attention to them, I will miss them.

Jesus, himself told us to look out for the warning signs of his return. When certain things start happening in the world, look out because this is a sign that he is returning, to reign and rule this earth.

So what warning signs are you reading today? Do you have any signs in your life that you are ignoring? Have you recognized signs & patterns that appear in your own life? Warning signs are there to protect us and teach us to be vigilant.

So if you see any cows lying down today, make sure you have your umbrella with you. Actually, come to think about it, I have a little ache in my ankle, better take a jacket out with me today to be sure!

Why Are Routines So Important?

Over the last two years I haven’t done as much traveling as I would have liked. I use to travel quite a bit, so last week while I was away for four days from my home and the office I was reminded what traveling felt like. Getting away occasionally from your surroundings is good as it enables you to refresh from the things that consume your life. However, last week I also discovered that getting out of your routine can be very dangerous as well.

At the beginning of the year I set myself a goal to lose 20 pounds in weight this year. Well, to my surprise I have already lost 15 pounds. This has been because of a consistent routine of working out a little everyday and watching what I eat. However, it only took four days to break my routine and I felt the effects. Until last night it had been a whole week since I had worked out, and I felt it. I had put some weight back on and felt very tired. I could tell that my body that I was out of routine.

I’ve realized that routines are an important part of our lives. I am not someone who likes too much routine as I get bored. However, when we get out of important routines we lose focus. I got out of the routine of working out, and what happened? I stopped thinking about what I was going to eat! My focus of taking care of my body was lost.

The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy about Godliness. He said that exercise of the body is a good thing and you will profit a little from it. However, more than exercise, it is Godliness that will benefit you in everything that you do. Exercise will benefit your body, but Godliness will benefit your soul, mind and spirit.

I have discovered that unless I keep in a routine I cannot measure things correctly. Unless I exercise daily and weigh myself regularly I cannot measure whether my body is strong or too weak, overweight or normal. In the same way we need to get into a routine of Godliness and find ways to measure  it; if our soul, mind and spirit is strong or too weak, whether it is alive or dying!

The thing about exercise is that you can’t do it occasionally and think you will get good results from it. This is the same with Godliness. I know when I am not feeling very Godly! These are the times I am out of routine and have neglected the things I do to stay “Godly”.

billhullOne of the ways I try to remain “Godly” is to remain my body it does not control me, but I control it. This is why I try to keep daily and weekly routines within my prayer life, personal bible study and also reading of books. These are not easy things to do, neither will I lie and say I do them everyday, but I have discovered how important it is and soon realize after a day or two when I am out of routine.

If you are looking for ways live in Godliness then get hold of Bill Hull’s book, ‘Choose The Life. It really is a good book that looks at spiritual disciplines and practical ways to live out a life that is “Godly”.

What are some of the ways you try to live a life of Godliness? What routines do you have that check you in check? Leave a comment and let me know!’

My Friend, Zoe

This week has been one of the most traumatic for one of my friends. However, it is going to end in a great celebration.

Early on Sunday morning my friend, Zoe, watched her father breathe his last breath standing at his hospital bed after he had endured a long road with cancer. Her dad, Roger was a wonderful man. Someone who you could not help but like. He was a big man, yet so gentle. Zoe thought the world of her dad.

For anyone to see their father die must be the worst experience this world could offer (even if you know this isn’t the end for them). However, for Zoe it was even worse. You see, today at 5pm Zoe is getting married to the love of her life Brandon (I have the privilege of marrying them), and her dad is not there to walk her down the isle.

I could not even comprehend the emotions this young girl is going through today. Yet she is strong, and when I mean strong, I mean very strong.

Two years ago when my wife, Raquel & I moved to the east coast to go on staff at a church that had almost closed it’s doors. Raquel went on staff as the music pastor and found a worship band of two people. Zoe had been part of Raquel’s band at the large church we came from, so we asked her if she would consider moving out to the east coast with us for a year to help get the church off it’s knees. Zoe agreed and came to live with us for three months, before moving out to live with some other girls in the church. It was then she meet the love of her life Brandon, and to cut a long story short, they are getting married today.

I have watched Zoe move the the other side of the country not really knowing anyone, go through struggles of finding a job, make new friends, be one of the most committed people I know; watch as her father battled through cancer, and also plan a wedding despite the family tragedy. Yet she has done it all by with a positive and unique attitude.

Today I am so proud of Zoe, she is someone I look up to. Yes she maybe a bit younger than me, but I have discovered she has taught me more about life than I have been able to teach her.

This world needs more Zoe’s that we can all learn from.
